What to watch for on the 2025 Audi A3

caution

DSG Mechatronics (S tronic)

The 7-speed S tronic carries the same DSG technology — fluid changes every 40k miles are essential. The RS3's 7-speed is a strengthened unit for the five-cylinder's torque.

Torque Splitter Complexity (RS3)

The RS3's rear torque splitter is a complex electro-hydraulic unit. Long-term reliability is unknown. Drift mode use will accelerate wear. Typical warranty covers the first 4 years/50k miles.

Audi A3 (8Y) Buyer's Guide

The Next-Generation Compact

The 8Y A3 (2021+) is the most technologically advanced A3 yet, with a fully digital interior, plug-in hybrid options, and Audi's latest MIB 3 infotainment. It shares the MQB Evo platform with the Golf VIII but offers more luxury and available quattro.

Powertrain: The 2.0T 40 TFSI (201 hp, 2021+) with 7-speed S tronic (DSG) and front-wheel drive or quattro. The S3 (2022+, 306 hp) has a 2.0T with a larger turbo and standard quattro. The RS3 (2022+, 401 hp) continues the legendary 2.5L turbo inline-five with 7-speed S tronic — now with a drift mode. The 40 TFSI replaces the previous 1.8T/2.0T naming with the new TFSI power-level badges.

What to look for: Too new for major issues. The 2.0T EA888 evo4 is the latest evolution — proven architecture. The S3 and RS3 are the enthusiast picks. The RS3's torque splitter rear differential (replaces the Haldex) allows torque vectoring and drift mode. The MIB 3 system is faster than previous Audi systems. The interior is tight but premium.

Generation

About the 8Y

The 2021-present Audi A3 (8Y generation) represents the model's fourth iteration, now riding on the MQB Evo platform. Offered exclusively as a four-door sedan in North America, this generation streamlined the powertrain lineup to a single 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive available across the trim hierarchy of Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige.

Compared to the preceding 8V generation, the 8Y A3 sheds the previous 1.4-liter base engine and manual transmission option, focusing on a more uniform, tech-forward experience. The cabin adopts a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and sharper exterior styling with a wider single-frame grille. This generation suits used buyers seeking a compact luxury sedan with a refined interior, composed ride, and predictable handling. Its reputation is solid, though the deletion of a manual transmission and the absence of a hatchback body style may narrow its appeal to traditional sedan loyalists. Overall, the 2021-present Audi A3 delivers a cohesive, upscale compact car experience without major reliability concerns.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the 8Y A3 better than the 8V?

The 8Y has a better infotainment system, updated engines, and a more modern interior. The 8V is more proven and costs less. Both are excellent — the 8Y is the better car, the 8V is the better value.

Should I buy the S3 or RS3?

The S3 is a fantastic daily driver with 306 hp and quattro. The RS3 costs $20,000 more but has the incredible five-cylinder engine and drift mode. For enthusiasts, the RS3 is worth every penny.
