G80 guide

BMW M3 (G80) Buyer's Guide

The Controversial Powerhouse

The G80 M3 (2021+) is the most controversial M3 ever — the massive vertical kidney grille, all-wheel drive available for the first time (Competition xDrive), and weight gain to nearly 3,900 lbs. But it's also the most capable M3 ever, with the S58 engine that's already a legend.

Powertrain: The 3.0L S58 twin-turbo inline-six (473 hp, base; 503 hp, Competition; 543 hp, CSL) with 6-speed manual (base only) or 8-speed ZF automatic (Competition). The xDrive version (2022+) has AWD with a rear-drive bias. The CSL (2023) is a lightweight, rear-drive special with 543 hp. The M3 Touring (wagon) arrived for 2023.

What to look for: Too new for major issues, but early models had some iDrive 8 glitches. The S58 is proving to be one of BMW's best engines. The ZF 8-speed is excellent. Carbon bucket seats are uncomfortable for long trips. The grille is still polarizing but looks better in person.

Generation

About the G80

The 2021-present BMW M3 (G80) marks a decisive shift to a dedicated performance platform shared with the M4, now offered exclusively as a four-door sedan. All models are powered by the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, available in standard 473-hp form or 503 hp in the Competition and Competition M xDrive trims. A six-speed manual transmission is available on the base M3, while the Competition variants use an eight-speed automatic; the xDrive system adds all-wheel drive to the automatic models. The lineup also includes the limited-production CS, which bumps output to 543 hp and sharpens chassis tuning. Compared to the preceding F80 generation, the G80 adopts a much more aggressive exterior, a larger and more tech-laden interior with BMW’s latest iDrive system, and a stiffer, more capable chassis that improves both daily comfort and circuit performance. This generation suits buyers who want a modern, daily-drivable sports sedan with genuine track capability and a choice of drivetrain configurations. The G80 has earned a strong reputation for outstanding powertrain refinement, precise handling, and surprising practicality, though its controversial styling remains a polarizing topic among enthusiasts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the G80 M3 better than the F80?

Objectively yes — the S58 engine is significantly better than the S55, the ZF 8-speed is better than the DCT, and xDrive provides all-weather capability. But it's heavier and more isolated than the F80.

Should I buy a G80 or wait for depreciation?

Depreciation has been slow. A 2021-2022 Competition xDrive at $68,000-75,000 is a good value. The CSL will appreciate. The base manual may hold value best long-term.
