Chevrolet Corvette (C7) Buyer's Guide
The Last Front-Engine Vette
The C7 Corvette (2014-2019) was the last front-engine Corvette and arguably the best. With the LT1 V8, a world-class interior, and the Z06's supercharged LT4, the C7 competed with European exotics at a fraction of the price.
Powertrain: The 6.2L LT1 V8 (455-460 hp, 2014-2019) with 7-speed manual or 6-speed automatic (2014) or 8-speed automatic (2015-2019). The Z06 (2015-2019, 650 hp) has a supercharged 6.2L LT4. The Grand Sport (2017-2019) combines the Z06's wide body and suspension with the LT1. The ZR1 (2019, 755 hp) has a supercharged 6.2L LT5 — the most powerful Corvette ever.
What to look for: The 7-speed manual has a controversial reverse lockout (pull up on the ring). The 8-speed auto (8L90) can have torque converter shudder. The LT1/LT4 engines have been reliable. The Z06 generates significant heat — track cooling is marginal. The C7 Stingray is the best all-around Corvette for most buyers.
About the C7
The 2014-2019 Chevrolet Corvette C7 marked a significant departure from its predecessor, introducing a more angular, aggressive design and a fully reengineered chassis. This generation moved away from the C6’s exposed headlamps and softer lines, adopting a sharper aesthetic with functional aerodynamic elements. The C7 was offered exclusively as a coupe, though a convertible variant was also produced; the coupe featured a removable roof panel. Powertrain options centered on a 6.2-liter V8, offered in naturally aspirated form in the Stingray and Grand Sport, and as a supercharged LT4 in the Z06. A supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 powered the range-topping ZR1. Transmission choices included a seven-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive standard across all trims.
Compared to the C6, the C7 brought a more modern interior, improved infotainment, and a stiffer aluminum frame. Trim levels ranged from the entry-level 1LT to the luxurious 3LT, with Grand Sport and Z06 packages adding track-focused hardware. The C7 suits buyers seeking a modern sports car with strong performance and daily usability, though its reputation is generally positive for driving engagement and reliability, with the manual transmission being a particular highlight for enthusiasts.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a C7 or C8 Corvette?
The C7 has a manual transmission, better steering feel, and costs $20,000-30,000 less. The C8 is faster and more exotic. The C7 is the last analog Corvette and will hold value well.
Is the C7 Z06 reliable on track?
With proper cooling upgrades (radiator, heat exchanger, transmission cooler), the Z06 can be reliable on track. Stock, it's prone to overheating. Budget $2,000-4,000 for cooling mods if tracking.
