About the 1st Gen

The 2001-2007 Ford Escape is the first generation of Ford's compact crossover, developed jointly with Mazda and sold alongside the closely related Mazda Tribute. Engines were a 2.0-liter Zetec four-cylinder, later a 2.3-liter Duratec, and a 3.0-liter Duratec V6, paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive optional. A hybrid version launched for 2005 was the first hybrid SUV sold in North America.

The Escape used a unibody structure with a boxy, upright body that maximized interior space in a compact footprint. It arrived just as the compact crossover segment was forming and sold in large numbers. The second generation that followed in 2008 was a heavy restyle of the same underlying platform rather than a clean-sheet design.

As a used buy, first-generation Escapes are inexpensive and mechanically simple, but age-related corrosion is the dominant concern, particularly around the rear subframe mounting points and suspension components on vehicles from salted-road regions. The 3.0-liter V6 is the stronger engine but consumes more fuel. Automatic transmission durability is mixed and service history matters. Hybrid models of this era are now old enough that battery condition should be assessed directly rather than assumed.
