About the XM

The 2011-2015 Kia Sorento is the XM generation and changed the model's character completely, abandoning the body-on-frame layout for a unibody crossover platform shared with the Hyundai Santa Fe. Engines were a 2.4-liter Theta II four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6, paired with a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive became standard with all-wheel drive optional, and an optional third row made this the first seven-seat Sorento.

The change delivered much better ride quality, fuel economy, and interior packaging at the cost of the off-road capability the BL had offered. This was also the first Sorento built in the United States, at Kia's Georgia plant. The UM generation that followed in 2016 grew larger and made the third row standard.

For used buyers, the XM Sorento is a practical and inexpensive crossover with a usable, if tight, third row. The 2.4-liter Theta II engine is part of the family subject to large-scale recalls addressing connecting rod bearing wear, and verifying recall completion and the knock sensor detection software update on a specific vehicle is the most important check. The 3.5-liter V6 is a different engine family and avoids that concern. Kia's long powertrain warranty has expired on all of these by now.
