Mazda CX-5 (2nd Gen) Buyer's Guide
The Driver's Compact SUV
The 2nd-gen CX-5 (2017+) took everything good about the first gen and made it better — more power, better interior, and G-Vectoring Control for improved handling. It's widely regarded as the most fun-to-drive compact SUV.
Powertrain: The 2.5L Skyactiv-G naturally aspirated (187 hp) with 6-speed automatic is the volume engine — responsive and reliable. The 2.5T Skyactiv-G (250 hp, 2019+) is available in higher trims and makes the CX-5 genuinely quick (0-60 in 6.5 seconds). The 6-speed auto is one of the best traditional automatics in the segment — smooth, responsive, and no CVT. The 2022 refresh brought a larger infotainment screen and updated styling.
What to look for: The 2.5L naturally aspirated is the reliability choice — no turbo, no direct injection carbon buildup (Skyactiv uses both port and direct injection). The 2.5T is fun but adds complexity. CD player was deleted post-2022 (not relevant but amusing). Check for cracked cylinder head on 2.5T (rare but known issue).
About the 2nd Gen
The 2017-present Mazda CX-5 (2nd Gen) is the second generation of Mazda's compact SUV, refining the original design with a more premium interior, improved noise isolation, and enhanced safety features. It is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 250 to 256 horsepower on higher trims with premium fuel. A 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel was available in certain markets. Transmissions include a six-speed automatic across the lineup, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available on all trims. The CX-5 is offered as a five-door SUV.
The 2nd Gen adopted a more mature, upscale design language with a higher-quality interior featuring available Nappa leather and real wood trim. The 2022 model year introduced a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen and added rear-seat reminder and rear-seat belt reminder. The turbocharged engine provides strong acceleration, making the CX-5 one of the more powerful options in its class. The 2024 model was the final year for the CX-5 before an all-new model was introduced.
For used buyers, the 2nd Gen CX-5 is one of the most engaging and premium-feeling compact SUVs in its class, with strong reliability ratings and excellent resale value. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter is smooth and proven, while the turbocharged version offers genuinely quick acceleration. The six-speed automatic is well-calibrated and responsive. The interior quality approaches that of more expensive luxury brands. This generation suits buyers who want a stylish, driver-focused compact SUV with a premium interior, strong performance options, and Mazda's reputation for reliability.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CX-5 more reliable than RAV4 or CR-V?
The CX-5 2.5L naturally aspirated is comparable in reliability to the RAV4 Hybrid and better than the CR-V 1.5T. The 6-speed auto is more reliable than any CVT. Overall, excellent reliability from the base engine.
Should I get the CX-5 Turbo?
If you enjoy driving, yes — 250 hp in a compact SUV is genuinely fun. But the 2.5L is adequate (187 hp) and more reliable long-term. The Turbo requires premium fuel for full power.
CX-5 vs RAV4 vs CR-V?
The CX-5 is the driver's choice — best handling, best interior materials, and best transmission. The RAV4 is the efficiency choice (hybrid). The CR-V is the space and practicality choice.
