About the D22
The 1998-2004 Nissan Frontier is the D22 generation and the first Nissan pickup sold in North America under the Frontier name, replacing the model previously known simply as the Hardbody. Engines were the 2.4-liter KA24DE four-cylinder and the 3.3-liter VG33E V6, with a supercharged VG33ER added for 2001 in the Frontier SC. Transmissions were a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive standard and part-time four-wheel drive optional. Regular Cab, King Cab, and from 2000 a Crew Cab were offered.
The supercharged V6 was an unusual offering in the compact truck class and gave the Frontier a performance advantage over its rivals. A facelift for 2001 brought more aggressive fender flares and revised styling. The D40 generation that followed in 2005 moved to a much larger platform shared with the Pathfinder and Xterra.
For used buyers, D22 Frontiers are simple, robust trucks, and the KA24DE four-cylinder in particular has an excellent longevity record. Frame and body corrosion are the dominant concerns at this age and should govern the purchase decision. Timing chain guide wear on the KA24DE produces a rattle that is worth listening for.
