About the R51
The 2005-2012 Nissan Pathfinder is the R51 generation and returned the model to a body-on-frame layout, sharing its F-Alpha platform with the Frontier pickup and the Xterra. Engines were the 4.0-liter VQ40DE V6 and, from 2008, a 5.6-liter V8 on the LE trim, paired with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard with part-time four-wheel drive optional. A third row of seating was standard, making this the first Pathfinder to seat seven.
The frame-based architecture restored serious towing and off-road capability at the cost of the ride quality and efficiency the R50 had offered. This generation is closely related mechanically to the Frontier and Xterra of the same period, which helps parts availability. The R52 generation that followed in 2013 abandoned the frame entirely and moved to a continuously variable transmission.
As a used buy, the R51 is capable and durable, but one issue defines the generation. The radiator on these vehicles incorporates the transmission cooler, and internal failure allows coolant and transmission fluid to mix, destroying the transmission. The symptom is a pink, milky fluid, and the repair is expensive. Any R51 under consideration should have the transmission fluid inspected directly, and a vehicle with a documented preventative bypass or radiator replacement is worth a clear premium. The VQ40DE engine itself is robust.
