About the B15

The 2000-2006 Nissan Sentra is the B15 generation, a compact sedan powered by the 1.8-liter QG18DE four-cylinder in most trims and the 2.5-liter QR25DE in the sporting SE-R and SE-R Spec V models. Transmissions were a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual on the Spec V, and a four-speed automatic, driving the front wheels. The only body style was a four-door sedan.

The SE-R Spec V was the enthusiast highlight of this generation, offering a genuinely quick naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual, and a limited-slip differential in an inexpensive package. Standard Sentras were conventional and inexpensive compact transport. The B16 generation that followed in 2007 grew substantially and moved to a continuously variable transmission on most trims.

For used buyers, B15 Sentras are cheap and simple, and the SE-R Spec V retains a following. Pre-catalytic converter breakdown is the well-documented failure mode on these engines, where material from the pre-cat is drawn back into the cylinders and causes wear, so a compression check is worthwhile. The QR25DE in the Spec V is known for elevated oil consumption and, on early cars, head gasket and pre-cat concerns. Corrosion and general age-related wear govern most purchase decisions at this point.
