2025 Rivian R1S

Common problems & what to know before you buy

Before you message the seller, know the documented failure patterns, repair cost exposure, and risk level for the 2025 Rivian R1S.

Common problems

What to watch for on the 2025 Rivian R1S

caution

First-Year Architecture Software Faults

2025 is year one of the zonal electrical architecture. Early cars reported infotainment resets, driver display dropouts, and connectivity faults, largely addressed through over-the-air updates. Confirm the vehicle is on current software and that updates install cleanly.

caution

No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

Rivian does not offer phone projection on any R1. Everything runs through Rivian's own interface with built-in Alexa, Spotify, and Apple Music. Not a defect, but a hard requirement for some buyers and not addable aftermarket.

Market pricing

2025 Rivian R1S price ranges

2025 Explore / Adventure Dual-Motor Standard$57,000-67,000
2025 Dual-Motor Large / Large+ Pack$65,000-78,000
2025 Performance Dual-Motor Max Pack$77,000-90,000
2025 Tri-Motor Max Pack$88,000-100,000
2026 (any configuration)add $5,000-10,000

Gen-2 cars have held value far better than gen 1, so the gap between a 2024 and a 2025 is wide for one model year. The R1S carries roughly a $5,000 premium over an equivalent R1T. Explore is limited to Dual-Motor Standard and Large packs. The Quad-Motor is 2026-only and sits well above everything else.

Rivian R1S (Gen 2) Buyer's Guide

The Rebuilt Three-Row

The second-generation R1S arrived for 2025 alongside the rebuilt R1T and shares all of its underlying changes. Rivian cut the electronic architecture from roughly 17 control units to about 7, removed around 1.6 miles of wiring, moved Dual-Motor cars to drive units it designs and manufactures itself, and fitted a new autonomy platform with 11 cameras and 5 radars. The body is close enough to gen 1 that model year is the only reliable way to tell them apart in a listing.

What you get: Explore returned as the entry trim on Dual-Motor Standard and Large packs, with Adventure covering everything above, including Performance Dual-Motor and the 850 hp Tri-Motor from 2025. The 1,025 hp Quad-Motor arrived for 2026. Range, efficiency, ride comfort, and cabin quietness all improved over gen 1, and cold-weather behaviour is noticeably better thanks to the revised thermal system. The third row remains, with the same practical caveat that using it leaves little cargo space.

What to look for: Gen 2 is too young for a systemic failure list. That is partly good news, since the rework deleted much of the wiring and software surface behind gen-1 complaints, and partly a caution, since a 2025 car is the first year of an all-new architecture. Confirm the vehicle is on current software and that updates install cleanly, check for open recalls by VIN, and repeat the gen-1 tire and windshield checks, because the weight and the glass did not change. If the windshield or front end has been replaced, ask for camera and radar recalibration documentation.

One thing that has not changed: no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, on any R1, either generation. Everything runs through Rivian's own software. It is a deliberate decision rather than a defect, but confirm you can live with it before buying.

About the 2nd Gen

The second-generation Rivian R1S arrived for 2025 and shares every underlying change made to the rebuilt R1T. Rivian cut the electronic architecture from roughly 17 control units to about 7, removed around 1.6 miles of wiring, moved Dual-Motor cars to drive units it engineers and manufactures itself, and fitted a new autonomy platform using 11 cameras and 5 radars. Explore returned as the entry trim on Dual-Motor Standard and Large packs, Adventure covered everything above it including the Performance Dual-Motor and the 850 horsepower Tri-Motor from 2025, and the 1,025 horsepower Quad-Motor followed for 2026. The three-row layout carries over unchanged, along with its trade-off between the third row and cargo space.

The body is close enough to the first generation that model year is the only reliable way to tell them apart in a listing. As a used buy, the gen-2 R1S improves on its predecessor in range, efficiency, ride comfort, cabin noise, and cold-weather behaviour, and deletes much of the wiring and software surface that produced first-generation complaints. Against that, gen-2 cars have barely depreciated compared with gen 1, so the price gap across a single model year is wide, and a 2025 vehicle is still the first year of an all-new architecture with a short field record. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not supported on any R1, either generation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the gen-2 R1S genuinely different from gen 1?

Yes. The electrical architecture, wiring harness, Dual-Motor drive units, and sensor suite were all redesigned for 2025. The exterior barely changed, so photos will not tell you which generation a listing shows. Model year is the reliable signal: 2025 and later is gen 2.

Does gen 2 fix the gen-1 reliability complaints?

It removes much of the cause. Cutting the control units and wiring eliminated a large part of the electrical failure surface behind gen-1 problems, and the thermal system was revised. What it cannot offer yet is a long field record, since the oldest gen-2 cars are only a couple of years old.

Is the R1S a real seven-seater?

It seats seven, but the third row suits children and short adult trips rather than long journeys, and raising it leaves very little cargo space. If you routinely need seven seats plus luggage, measure carefully against a conventional three-row SUV before committing.

Should I buy a used gen 1 or stretch to a gen 2?

Budget and warranty decide it. A gen-1 Dual-Motor can be $20,000-30,000 cheaper with battery and drivetrain coverage running to 175,000 miles. A gen 2 costs meaningfully more but brings a better platform and more remaining comprehensive coverage.

What should I check on a gen-2 test drive?

Cycle every powered item: liftgate, frunk, charge port door, third row. Confirm the software version is current and no update is stuck. Check every air suspension height mode. Ask for camera and radar calibration paperwork if the windshield has been replaced. A pre-purchase inspection at a Rivian service center is worth the trip.
