What to watch for on the 2012 Subaru WRX
Ringland Failure (EJ257)
STI piston ringlands can crack, especially on modified cars. Symptoms: low compression, knocking, smoke. A compression and leak-down test is mandatory before purchase.
5-Speed Transmission (WRX)
The WRX's 5-speed remains fragile — 2nd gear syncro and center diff are weak points. The STI's 6-speed is much stronger and a popular swap.

Subaru WRX (GR/GV) Buyer's Guide
The Hatchback Era
The GR/GV WRX (2008-2014) is the only WRX generation offered as a 5-door hatchback — making it the most practical and arguably the best-looking WRX of the modern era. The wide-body STI hatchback is especially sought after.
Powertrain: The 2.5L EJ255 turbo (265 hp, 2008-2014 WRX) with 5-speed manual. The STI uses a 2.5L EJ257 (305 hp, 2008-2014) with 6-speed manual and DCCD AWD. The 2009 WRX got a power bump from 224 hp (2008) to 265 hp with revised gearing, making it a much better car. The 2011 WRX and STI got wide-body styling.
What to look for: The 2008 WRX was underpowered — avoid it. Start with 2009+. The STI hatch is the collector pick — clean examples are rising in value. The 5-speed WRX transmission is still fragile. Rust on the rear hatch and rear wheel arches. Never buy a modified car without a compression test.
About the GR/GV
The 2008-2014 Subaru WRX (GR/GV generation) marked a shift to a wider, more aggressive body and a larger 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine across the lineup, replacing the previous 2.0-liter in the standard WRX. Offered as both a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback, this generation brought a more mature interior and improved chassis rigidity. The standard WRX used a 5-speed manual transmission, while the high-performance STI received a 6-speed manual with a driver-controlled center differential. All models came with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive and ran on gasoline. Trim levels included Base, Premium, and Limited for the WRX, plus the dedicated STI variant with its own suspension, brakes, and cosmetic upgrades.
Compared to the preceding GD generation, the GR/GV cars gained a wider track, revised suspension geometry, and a more refined cabin. The 2009 model year saw a power increase for the WRX to 265 horsepower, and the 2011 refresh brought a wider body, sharper styling, and further suspension revisions. This generation is well-regarded among used buyers for its strong performance, all-weather capability, and aftermarket support, though early examples (2008-2009) are known for potential ringland failures under modified or abusive use. It suits drivers seeking a practical, engaging daily driver with genuine rally heritage, provided they prioritize maintenance records and avoid heavily tuned examples.

Frequently asked questions
Is the GR WRX hatch the best generation?
Many enthusiasts say yes — it's the only WRX hatchback, and the wide-body STI hatch is gorgeous. It's practical, fun, and has aged incredibly well visually.
WRX hatch vs STI hatch?
The STI has a stronger 6-speed, DCCD, and better resale. The WRX is lighter, cheaper to buy and maintain. Both are excellent. The STI is more special; the WRX is more sensible.
