2025 Tesla Model X

Common problems & what to know before you buy

Before you message the seller, know the documented failure patterns, repair cost exposure, and risk level for the 2025 Tesla Model X.

Common problems

What to watch for on the 2025 Tesla Model X

major

Falcon Wing Door Faults

Revised but not eliminated. Alignment drift, sensor errors, and seal leaks remain the most likely expensive fault on the car. Cycle both doors repeatedly from every control point and check the headliner for water staining.

Typical repair cost
$1,500-4,000
major

Heat Pump and Octovalve Fault (2022)

Early refresh cars shared the Model S cold-weather heat pump failures, which could leave the cabin without heat and cut range sharply. Verify the software and hardware remedy was applied on a 2022 vehicle.

Typical repair cost

2025 Tesla Model X price ranges

2022 Long Range$48,000-60,000
2022 Plaid$58,000-72,000
2023-2024 Long Range$58,000-74,000
2023-2024 Plaid$70,000-88,000
2025-2026 Long Range / Plaid$75,000-105,000

2023 and later cars carry a premium for better assembly and for the availability of a round steering wheel, which many buyers specifically seek. Long Range is the value pick: still extremely quick, slightly longer-legged, and noticeably cheaper to run than Plaid.

Tesla Model X Refresh (2022+) Buyer's Guide

Plaid Power, Same Doors

The refreshed Model X arrived for 2022 with the Palladium interior, a heat pump, and the Plaid tri-motor powertrain that makes it one of the quickest SUVs ever built. The dashboard, screens, and rear drive unit layout all came from the Model S refresh, and cabin quality is a clear step up from the first generation.

What did not change: the falcon wing doors. They remain the defining complexity of the model and the most likely source of an expensive fault, even though the hardware was revised. Inspect them with exactly the same care a first-generation car deserves.

The other controversial part: 2022 cars carry the yoke steering wheel with no stalks, indicators on wheel buttons, and gear selection on the touchscreen. A conventional round wheel became available from 2023. Test whichever the car has properly, on a real drive, before deciding it does or does not suit you.

Trims: Long Range and Plaid. Long Range is the sensible pick and still accelerates faster than most sports cars. Plaid adds a third motor and a substantial premium in both purchase price and running costs.

What to look for: Too young for a long field record, but early 2022 refresh cars carried the same teething issues as the refreshed Model S, including heat pump faults and assembly inconsistency. Confirm the heat pump remedy, check recalls by VIN, and satisfy yourself on the steering wheel question.

About the 2nd Gen

The refreshed Tesla Model X arrived for 2022, taking the Palladium dashboard, screens and rear drive unit layout from the Model S refresh and adding a heat pump. Cabin quality is a clear step up from the first generation, and the Plaid tri-motor version is one of the quickest SUVs ever built, with the Long Range serving as the sensible choice that still accelerates faster than most sports cars. What did not change is the falcon wing door mechanism, which was revised but not fundamentally rethought and remains the most likely source of an expensive fault.

2022 cars carry the yoke steering wheel with no stalks, indicators on wheel buttons, and gear selection on the touchscreen, with a conventional round wheel becoming available from 2023. Those early refresh vehicles also shared the Model S teething problems, including cold-weather heat pump failures and assembly inconsistency, so they warrant closer inspection and keener pricing than a later car. The panoramic windshield remains extremely expensive to replace, tire wear is heavy on a vehicle of this weight and pace, and insurance and collision repair costs are high. As with every Tesla, there is no support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Did the refresh fix the falcon wing doors?

It revised them, but it did not eliminate the failure modes. Alignment, sensors, and seals remain the most likely expensive repair on the car. Inspect them with the same care a first-generation Model X deserves.

Is Plaid worth it over Long Range?

Only if you want the performance for its own sake. The Long Range is already faster than almost any SUV on the road, goes slightly further, and costs meaningfully less to run because it does not consume tires at the same rate.

Should I avoid 2022 cars?

Inspect them harder rather than avoid them. They are the first year of the refresh and carry both the heat pump issue and early build inconsistency, plus the yoke. Confirm the heat pump remedy and price the car accordingly.

Can I get a round steering wheel?

It became available from 2023. Retrofit is possible on a 2022 car but neither cheap nor trivial. If you know you want the round wheel, buying a car that already has it is the simpler path.
