2024 Toyota Prius

The 2023-present Toyota Prius is the fifth generation and represents the largest change in the model's character since its introduction. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder replaces the long-serving 1.8-liter, producing roughly 194 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and slightly more with all-wheel drive, a near-doubling of output over the previous generation. Drive is through a power-split continuously variable transmission, with all-wheel drive available via a rear electric motor. A plug-in Prius Prime sits above the standard car.

The redesign paired the power increase with a dramatically lower, wider body that abandoned the utilitarian look the model had carried since 2004. Combined fuel economy remained in the mid-fifties despite the added performance. Rear headroom and outward visibility are the trade-offs most frequently noted against the previous generation.

For used buyers, the fifth-generation Prius is recent enough that most examples remain under factory warranty and long-term data is not yet available. The hybrid system is an evolution of a very well-proven architecture rather than a clean-sheet design, which lowers the usual risk of an early-production model. Buyers cross-shopping this against the fourth generation are trading rear-seat space and outward visibility for significantly better performance and a far more modern interior.
