About the 3rd Gen

The 2011-2020 Toyota Sienna is the third generation of the minivan and had a long production run with a significant mid-cycle update. It was powered by the 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6, replaced by the direct-injected 2GR-FKS for 2017, with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder offered in early years of the run. Transmissions were a six-speed automatic through 2016 and an eight-speed automatic from 2017. Front-wheel drive was standard and all-wheel drive remained available, making this the only all-wheel-drive minivan sold in the United States for much of the period.

This generation added the sport-tuned SE trim, a genuinely unusual proposition in the minivan class, along with an available wide-screen rear entertainment system and seating for up to eight. The 2015 update revised the interior materials and infotainment, and the 2018 model year brought standard Toyota Safety Sense. The fourth generation that followed in 2021 switched to hybrid power exclusively.

For used buyers, this generation is the practical high point of the Sienna line, offering the space and sliding doors of a minivan with all-wheel-drive traction and a well-proven V6. Oil cooler line failure and water pump service are the routine V6 items. Power sliding door hardware remains the most common annoyance across the generation. Later cars with the 2GR-FKS engine, the eight-speed automatic, and standard safety equipment are the ones worth paying a premium for.
