Audi A4 (B5) Buyer's Guide

The One That Started It All

The B5 A4 (1996-2001) was Audi's first modern compact executive sedan and introduced the world to the 1.8T engine. It's the car that established Audi's reputation for quattro AWD and turbocharged efficiency. The B5 S4 is a legend.

Powertrain: The 1.8L turbo 1.8T (150-190 hp) with 5-speed manual or 5-speed Tiptronic is the volume engine — tunable and reliable with proper maintenance. The 2.8L V6 (190 hp, 1996-1999) is smooth but doesn't respond to tuning. The S4 (2000-2001, 250 hp) has a 2.7L twin-turbo V6 with 6-speed manual — a genuine performance sedan. The RS4 was never officially sold in the US.

What to look for: The 1.8T sludge issue (long oil change intervals clog the oil pickup) is the #1 killer. The S4's turbos and hot-side components fail. Rust on rear wheel arches. The 1.8T with a manual is the most reliable choice. The S4 is a maintenance commitment. A well-maintained B5 1.8T is a fantastic $3,000-6,000 car.

Generation

About the B5

The 1996-2001 Audi A4 (B5 generation) marked the model’s first appearance in North America, replacing the Audi 80 and establishing a new benchmark for compact executive sedans. It was offered as a four-door sedan and, from 1997 onward, as the Avant wagon. Powertrain choices consisted of a 1.8L turbocharged four-cylinder (1.8T) producing 150 hp and a naturally aspirated 2.8L V6 making 190 hp. Both engines paired with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The majority of B5 A4s were front-wheel drive, but the hallmark quattro all-wheel-drive system was available on both engine variants, typically bundled with the V6 or as an option on the 1.8T.

Compared to the preceding Audi 80, the B5 A4 introduced a more modern, streamlined design, a fully galvanized body for corrosion resistance, and a torsion-beam rear suspension that evolved into a multi-link setup later in the generation. The 1999 refresh brought revised headlights, bumpers, and interior trim, along with the introduction of the 1.8T engine as the standard offering. As a used buy, the B5 A4 appeals to enthusiasts seeking a relatively lightweight, analog driving experience with strong aftermarket support, though early models require attention to timing belt intervals and ignition coil packs. The generation’s reputation for solid build quality and quattro capability makes it a durable choice for those comfortable with age-appropriate maintenance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the B5 A4 a good first car?

A 1.8T manual B5 for $4,000-6,000 is an excellent first car — good handling, turbo power, quattro AWD. Just insist on documented 5,000-mile oil changes to avoid sludge.

Is the B5 S4 worth buying?

The S4 is a classic now — twin-turbo V6, 6-speed manual, quattro. But maintenance is expensive and parts are getting harder to find. Budget $3,000-5,000/year to keep one sorted.
