Audi A4 (B9) Buyer's Guide

The Refined Executive

The B9 A4 (2017-2024) is the most refined A4 yet — a quieter, more luxurious cabin, mild-hybrid powertrains, and a fully digital virtual cockpit. It's the last internal-combustion A4 before Audi transitions to electric vehicles.

Powertrain: The 2.0T TFSI 2.0L turbo (252 hp, 2017-2018; 261 hp, 2020+) with 7-speed S tronic (dual-clutch) and quattro Ultra (on-demand AWD). The 2019+ models added a 12-volt mild-hybrid system. The S4 (2018-2023, 349 hp) has a 3.0T turbo V6 with 8-speed Tiptronic. The RS4 was not sold in the US. The 2020 refresh brought updated styling, LED matrix headlights, and the mild hybrid on all models.

What to look for: The B9 has been very reliable. The 2.0T's dual-clutch S tronic is excellent. The mild-hybrid system has been trouble-free. The S4's 3.0T V6 carries over and is proven. The 2020+ models have the best infotainment (MIB 3). The cabin is a benchmark for the segment. The B9 represents the peak of the internal-combustion A4.

Generation

About the B9

The 2017-present Audi A4 (B9 generation) marked a significant shift to the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, shedding weight and adding structural rigidity while introducing a fully digital cockpit and updated infotainment. Available as a four-door sedan and, in select markets, as the allroad quattro wagon, this generation standardized a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine across the lineup. Output varied by trim: base models delivered 190 hp, while higher trims (including the S line) produced 252 hp. Front-wheel drive was standard on the “Ultra” variant, with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive optional or standard on most trims. Transmission choices included a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (S tronic) and, through the 2019 model year, a six-speed manual on certain front-drive configurations.

Compared to the preceding B8.5 generation, the B9 A4 adopted a sharper exterior design with angular LED lighting, a wider grille, and a more minimalist interior with a standard 7.0-inch display (upgradable to 8.3 inches). The chassis received a five-link front and rear suspension for improved ride quality and handling. A mid-cycle facelift for 2020 brought updated bumpers, revised engine tuning, and the addition of mild-hybrid technology on automatic models.

As a used buy, the B9 A4 appeals to buyers seeking a premium compact sedan with a balanced blend of comfort, technology, and all-weather capability. Its reputation is generally strong for refinement and interior quality, though early examples may require attention to the dual-clutch transmission’s mechatronic unit and occasional water pump failures. It suits those who prioritize a composed daily driver over outright sportiness.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the B9 A4 reliable?

Yes — the B9 is one of the most reliable A4 generations. The 2.0T and S tronic are well-proven. The mild-hybrid system has been trouble-free. It's a strong competitor to the 3 Series and C-Class in reliability.

Should I buy an A4 or A4 Allroad?

The Allroad offers 1.4 inches of extra ground clearance and standard AWD. It's more versatile but slightly heavier and less sporty. The A4 is the better handler; the Allroad is the better daily.
