BMW 3 Series (G20) Buyer's Guide
The Modern Tech Flagship
The G20 3 Series (2019+) brought the 3 Series into the modern era with a fully digital interior, mild-hybrid powertrains, and the most advanced chassis technology ever offered in a compact executive sedan. It's the most capable 3 Series ever, though some say it lost the ultimate driving machine magic.
Powertrain: The 330i has the 2.0T B48 (255 hp) with 8-speed ZF automatic or 6-speed manual (early 330i only). The M340i has the 3.0T B58 (382 hp) with 8-speed auto and xDrive — one of the best engines ever made. The 330e plug-in hybrid (288 hp combined) offers 20+ miles of EV range. The M3 (2021+) has the S58 twin-turbo (473-503 hp). The 2023 LCI refresh brought updated iDrive 8 and mild-hybrid assistance.
What to look for: The B48 and B58 engines are proven and reliable. The 8-speed ZF is excellent. The G20's steering is fully electric and less feel than the F30. The iDrive 7 (2019-2022) is excellent; iDrive 8 (2023+) has a massive curved display. The M340i with xDrive is the sweet spot. The M3 Competition xDrive is a supercar slayer.
About the G20
The 2019-present BMW 3 Series (G20) is the seventh generation of BMW's compact executive sedan, returning to a sharper driving focus after the F30's emphasis on comfort. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 330i producing 255 horsepower and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six in the M340i producing 382 horsepower, with the M3 Competition producing 503 horsepower. A 48-volt mild hybrid system was added to the M340i in 2020. Transmissions include an eight-speed automatic across most models, with a six-speed manual discontinued in most markets. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with xDrive all-wheel drive available on all models. Body styles include the G20 sedan and G21 wagon (Touring), with the M3 offered as a sedan only.
The G20 introduced a more aggressive exterior design, a fully digital instrument cluster, and BMW's latest iDrive 7.0 system. The chassis is stiffer and lighter than the F30, with improved suspension geometry that brings the 3 Series closer to the benchmark handling of the E46 era. The M340i offers near-M3 performance with greater daily usability.
For used buyers, the G20 is a modern, technologically advanced sports sedan that reclaims much of the driving character that made the 3 Series famous. The B48 and B58 engines are proven and reliable. The eight-speed automatic is smooth and responsive. The xDrive system provides excellent all-weather traction without compromising the rear-wheel-drive character. This generation suits buyers who want a premium compact sedan with sharp handling, modern technology, and a choice of powerful engines.

Frequently asked questions
Is the G20 3 Series better than the F30?
The G20 has a better interior, better technology, better engines (B48/B58 > N20/N55), and better ride quality. The F30 has more steering feel and costs $10,000-15,000 less.
Should I buy a 330i or M340i?
The M340i's B58 engine and xDrive make it one of the best all-around cars on sale. The 330i is adequate but not special. The M340i is worth the premium if your budget allows.
