N20 Timing Chain Failure (2012-2015)

BMW 3 Series (F30) Buyer's Guide

Turbocharged Entry Luxury

The F30 3 Series (2012-2019) was BMW's volume leader, but it lost some of the driver-focused magic of the E90. Still, it offered modern turbocharged engines, improved fuel economy, and BMW's famous Ultimate Driving Machine character.

Powertrain: The 320i has the 2.0T N20 (180 hp) with 8-speed auto. The 328i/330i uses the 2.0T N20 (240 hp) or later B48 (248 hp). The 335i/340i uses the 3.0T N55 (300 hp) or B58 (320 hp) inline-six — one of BMW's best engines. The 2017 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) refresh brought updated styling, the B48/B58 engines, and iDrive 6. The 8-speed ZF automatic is excellent. A 6-speed manual was available on some models.

What to look for: The N20 engine (2012-2015) has known timing chain guide failures. The B48/B58 (2016+) are much more reliable. The N55 inline-six is good but has cooling system and charge pipe issues. The B58 is the engine to get — powerful and reliable. The 8-speed ZF is excellent with regular fluid changes.

Generation

About the F30

The 2012-2019 BMW 3 Series, known as the F30 generation, marked a significant shift toward efficiency and technology while retaining the sedan's sporty character. This generation introduced a lighter chassis and a more upscale interior compared to its predecessor, the E90. Body styles were limited to a four-door sedan and a five-door wagon (Touring), with no coupe or convertible offered under the 3 Series nameplate for this generation, as those body styles moved to the 4 Series lineup in 2014.

Powertrain options centered on turbocharged gasoline and diesel four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, paired primarily with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual was available on select models. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with xDrive all-wheel drive offered across most trims. Key models include the 320i, 328i, 330i, 335i, and 340i, with the latter featuring a more powerful inline-six.

As a used buy, the F30 3 Series suits buyers seeking a balanced blend of driving engagement, daily usability, and modern features. Its reputation is generally strong, though early examples may require attention to common issues like cooling system components and the timing chain on certain four-cylinder engines. The later model years, particularly the 2016 refresh, benefit from improved infotainment and powertrain refinements, making them a more polished choice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which F30 3 Series is most reliable?

The 2016+ 330i (B48) and 340i (B58) are the most reliable. Avoid the 2012-2015 N20 4-cylinder. The B58 inline-six is one of BMW's best engines ever.

Should I buy an F30 or save for a G20?

The F30 is a better value — $18,000-25,000 for a 2016+ 330i. The G20 has a nicer interior and better tech but costs $10,000-15,000 more. The F30 B58 engine is just as good as the G20's.

What should I check before buying a used F30?

Service records for oil changes (every 10k miles or less). N20 timing chain condition. ZF transmission fluid change history. Coolant system condition. Check for leaks and listen for rattles on cold start.
