Ford Mustang (S550) Buyer's Guide

Coyote V8 and EcoBoost

The S550 Mustang brought independent rear suspension for the first time, transforming it from a straight-line car to a genuine sports coupe. Three engine options: the 2.3L EcoBoost, 5.0L Coyote V8, and Shelby GT350/GT500 variants.

What changed: The 2018 refresh brought a revised 5.0L with dual injection (port + direct), a 10-speed automatic replacing the 6-speed, and updated styling. The 2020 GT500 added a 760 hp supercharged V8.

Which to buy: The 2018+ GT with the 10-speed auto is the sweet spot. The 2015-2017 MT82 manual has known issues. The EcoBoost is great value if you don't need V8 sound, but the GT holds value better.

Frequently asked questions

Auto or manual S550 Mustang?

The 2018+ 10-speed auto is faster and better for daily driving. The 2015-2017 MT82 manual has known issues. The 2018+ manual is improved but the auto is still recommended.

Is the EcoBoost worth it?

Yes — 310 hp, handles better than the V8 due to lighter front end, and responds well to tuning. But it doesn't sound like a Mustang. If the V8 experience matters, save for the GT.
