Honda CR-V (5th Gen) Buyer's Guide

Oil Dilution and CVT Issues

The 5th-gen CR-V (2017-2022) is one of the most popular compact SUVs ever sold. It introduced the turbocharged 1.5T across most trims, replacing the previous 2.4L naturally aspirated engine. Roomy interior, excellent resale value, and strong reliability with caveats.

Engine choices: The 1.5L turbo (L15) makes 190 hp and is efficient but had early oil dilution issues. The 2.4L naturally aspirated K24 is only in the LX trim of 2017-2018 and is the most reliable choice. The Hybrid (2019+) uses a 2.0L Atkinson with e-CVT and is excellent.

What to look for: The 1.5T oil dilution was mostly addressed with software updates by 2019. CVT reliability is good with regular fluid changes (every 30,000 miles recommended). The Hybrid is the pick of the range — smoother, more efficient, and more reliable.

Generation

About the 5th Gen

The 2017-2022 Honda CR-V represents the fifth generation of the compact SUV, a substantial redesign that introduced a more upscale interior, expanded cargo space, and a shift toward turbocharged power. This generation moved to Honda’s global compact platform, offering a sleeker exterior and improved ride comfort compared to its predecessor. Body style is limited to a five-door SUV.

Powertrain options include a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower, paired exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. A 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder was offered for the 2017 model year only. For 2020, Honda added a hybrid variant combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a CVT, delivering 212 combined horsepower and improved fuel economy. The hybrid is available in LX, EX, and Touring trims.

As a used buy, the fifth-generation CR-V suits buyers seeking a practical, fuel-efficient, and spacious compact crossover with strong resale value. Its reputation is generally positive, though early 2017-2018 models have been subject to recalls related to fuel dilution in the 1.5T engine and in-vehicle network software issues. Later model years and hybrid versions are considered more refined and reliable. The cabin is quiet and well-equipped across trims, with standard Honda Sensing safety suite from 2017 onward.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which CR-V engine is best?

The Hybrid powertrain is the clear winner — 40+ MPG, more torque from the electric motors, no CVT concerns, and bulletproof reliability. The 1.5T is fine if the oil dilution update was applied.

How important are CVT fluid changes?

Very. Honda says the CVT fluid is 'lifetime' but owners and mechanics strongly recommend changes every 30,000 miles. A CR-V with documented CVT service is worth seeking out.
