6th Gen guide

Honda CR-V (6th Gen) Buyer's Guide

All-Hybrid Powertrain

The 6th-gen CR-V (2023+) went all-hybrid in most trims, dropping the 1.5T for a 2.0L Atkinson hybrid that delivers 204 hp and 40+ MPG. It's larger inside, quieter, and the first CR-V with Google Built-in. The 1.5T is retained only on base LX and some EX trims.

What's new: The hybrid system is the same Sport Hybrid i-MMD found in the Accord and Civic — it's proven, reliable, and smooth. The 2024 model added the CR-V e:FCEV (hydrogen fuel-cell plug-in) but that's California-only. The interior is genuinely premium for the segment.

What to look for: Too new for major issues. The hybrid system is proving reliable. Early 2023 models had some infotainment glitches addressed by over-the-air updates. The 1.5T in base trims shares the same engine as the 5th-gen — same oil dilution awareness applies.

Generation

About the 6th Gen

The 2023-present Honda CR-V represents the sixth generation of the compact SUV, fully redesigned with a more squared-off exterior, a larger cabin, and an upgraded infotainment system. This generation is offered exclusively as a five-door SUV and is available with two powertrains: a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid mated to an electronic CVT. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are offered across the lineup. Trim levels include LX, EX, EX-L, Sport, and Sport Touring, with the Sport and Sport Touring trims being hybrid-only.

Compared to the fifth generation, the 2023 redesign brought a more rigid body structure, improved rear-seat legroom, and a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen (9.0-inch on higher trims). The hybrid system was also revised for smoother power delivery and slightly better fuel economy. This generation suits used buyers seeking a refined, spacious, and fuel-efficient compact SUV with strong resale value and a reputation for reliability. The hybrid models are particularly well-regarded for their seamless operation and low running costs, while the turbocharged variant offers a familiar, responsive driving experience.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the 6th-gen CR-V reliable?

Too early for definitive data, but the hybrid system is Honda's third-generation and proven in the Accord and Civic. Early indicators are very positive.

Should I buy the 1.5T or Hybrid?

Always the Hybrid. The fuel savings, smoother driving experience, and proven i-MMD system make it an easy choice. The 1.5T only makes sense on a tight budget.
