About the 5th Gen

The 2018-present Honda Odyssey is the fifth generation of the minivan, built on a lighter and stiffer platform with a smoother body that abandons the stepped beltline of its predecessor. It is powered by the 3.5-liter J35Y6 V6 paired with a nine-speed automatic on mid trims and a ten-speed automatic on Touring and Elite, driving the front wheels. Magic Slide second-row seats move laterally as well as fore and aft, allowing a center seat to be removed and the outer seats repositioned.

Honda Sensing driver assistance became standard across the range during this generation, and higher trims added a cabin camera and rear-seat intercom aimed squarely at families. The interior is quieter and better finished than the previous van. A facelift in 2021 revised the front-end styling and simplified the trim structure.

For used buyers, the fifth-generation Odyssey is among the most capable minivans available and holds value well. The nine-speed automatic drew the most owner complaints early in the run for hesitation and harsh shifts, while the ten-speed on higher trims has a better record, which makes trim level a meaningful part of the buying decision. Variable Cylinder Management is present on this engine and the familiar oil consumption considerations still apply. Infotainment software behavior improved noticeably with the 2021 update.
