What to watch for on the 1993 Jeep Wrangler
3.8L V6 Oil Consumption (2007-2011)
The 3.8L V6 can consume 1 quart every 1,000 miles. This was a known issue from new. The 3.6L Pentastar (2012+) is more reliable, makes more power, and doesn't have this problem.
Frame Rot (Steering Box Area)
Front frame section where the steering box mounts can rust through, especially in salt-belt states. Dangerous if the steering box separates from the frame. Inspect thoroughly before buying.

1993 Jeep Wrangler price ranges
2012+ with the 3.6L Pentastar is the sweet spot. Rubicon holds value best. The 4-door Unlimited is more practical and has better resale. Avoid 2007-2011 3.8L models. Frame inspection is mandatory.

Jeep Wrangler (JK) Buyer's Guide
The Modern Classic Off-Roader
The JK Wrangler (2007-2018) was a massive leap forward for Jeep — the first 4-door Wrangler Unlimited, coil-spring suspension, and modern powertrains. The JK made the Wrangler practical enough for daily use while retaining legendary off-road capability.
Powertrain: The 3.8L V6 (202 hp, 2007-2011) is underpowered and has oil consumption issues. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 (285 hp, 2012-2018) is vastly superior — more power, better fuel economy, and more reliable. The 2012+ models also have a better interior and the 5-speed automatic replaced the 4-speed. A 6-speed manual (NSG370 or earlier) was available throughout.
What to look for: The 2012-2018 models with the 3.6L Pentastar are the ones to buy. The 3.8L is underpowered and drinks oil. Check for frame rot on non-rust-proofed examples, especially the front frame where the steering box mounts. Death wobble (steering oscillation) is a common Jeep issue that can be fixed with proper steering components.

Frequently asked questions
Is the JK Wrangler reliable?
The 2012-2018 3.6L Pentastar models are reasonably reliable for a Wrangler. The 3.8L models (2007-2011) are not. Expect maintenance costs higher than a typical SUV.
Should I buy a JK or JL Wrangler?
The JL (2018+) is more refined — better ride, better interior, better fuel economy. But the JK is $5,000-10,000 cheaper. A 2012-2018 JK with the 3.6L is excellent value.
What should I check on a test drive?
Steering wheel play and any wobble. Frame condition (especially front steering box area). 4WD engagement (all ranges). Soft top condition. Check for oil leaks from the 3.6L filter housing.
