3.6L Oil Filter Housing Leak
The plastic oil filter/cooler housing can crack and leak oil. Common across 3.6L Pentastar applications. Aftermarket aluminum replacement is the permanent fix.
EcoDiesel Emissions System
The 3.0L EcoDiesel has DEF system and EGR cooler concerns. Emissions repairs are expensive. The diesel is only worth it if you need the towing torque (4,250 lbs vs the V6's 3,500 lbs).

Jeep Wrangler (JL) Buyer's Guide
The Modern Wrangler Evolution
The JL Wrangler (2018+) is the most refined, capable, and practical Wrangler ever. It offers a better ride, a much improved interior, available 4-door unlimited, and the first diesel Wrangler in the US. The 2024 refresh (with the 3.6L's power increase to 285 hp) continues the evolution.
Powertrain: The 3.6L Pentastar V6 (285 hp, 2018-2023; 285 hp continues) with 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic is the volume leader. The 2.0L turbo I4 (270 hp, 2018+) with 8-speed auto is the efficiency choice — more torque than the V6 and better fuel economy. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (260 hp, 2020-2023) with 8-speed auto is the torque monster (442 lb-ft). The 2024 refresh brought the 6-speed manual now paired only with the 2.0T.
What to look for: The 3.6L Pentastar is proven reliable. The 2.0T has been good but has less long-term data. The EcoDiesel has emissions system complexity. The 8-speed ZF transmission is excellent. The manual is the enthusiast choice (but the clutch is heavy). The JL's interior is a massive upgrade over the JK. The 2024+ models have upgraded Uconnect 5.
About the JL
The 2018-present Jeep Wrangler (JL) is the fifth generation of the Wrangler, adding a more modern interior, improved on-road refinement, and a turbocharged engine option while maintaining the Wrangler's legendary off-road capability. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance producing 270 horsepower, a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 producing 285 horsepower, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 producing 260 horsepower, and the range-topping 6.4-liter Hemi V8 in the Rubicon 392 producing 470 horsepower. A 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor producing 375 horsepower was added for 2021. Transmissions include a six-speed manual, an eight-speed automatic, and a TorqueFlite eight-speed on the 392. Four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case is standard. Body styles include a two-door convertible and a four-door Unlimited convertible.
The JL introduced a more refined interior with improved materials, a larger touchscreen infotainment system, and available leather upholstery. The Sky One-Touch power soft top was a new option. The 4xe plug-in hybrid offers up to 21 miles of electric-only range and can operate in near-silence on the trail. The Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter Hemi V8 is the most powerful factory Wrangler ever produced, offering 0-60 mph in approximately 4.5 seconds.
For used buyers, the JL Wrangler is a modern, versatile off-roader with improved on-road manners and a range of powertrain options. The Pentastar V6 is proven and reliable. The turbocharged four-cylinder offers good torque and efficiency but has reported some reliability concerns. The 4xe plug-in hybrid provides electric-only commuting capability and strong off-road torque from the electric motor. The eight-speed automatic is smooth and well-calibrated. This generation suits buyers who want the most refined, capable, and technologically advanced Wrangler yet, with powertrain options ranging from efficient hybrid to V8-powered off-road monster.

Frequently asked questions
Which JL Wrangler engine is best?
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the proven, reliable choice. The 2.0T offers better fuel economy and more low-end torque. The EcoDiesel is only for heavy towers. The 4XE is for the EV tax credit benefit.
Should I buy a JL or a JK Wrangler?
The JL is significantly better in every way — ride quality, interior, powertrain options, and safety. The JK is $10,000-15,000 cheaper. The JL is worth the premium if you daily drive your Wrangler.
