Mazda MX-5 Miata (NC) Buyer's Guide

The Underrated Roadster

The NC MX-5 Miata (2006-2015) is the largest and most practical Miata, often called the 'boat' by purists. But it's also the most comfortable daily driver, with more interior space, a real trunk, and a proven 2.0L engine. It's the best value in the Miata lineup.

Powertrain: The 2.0L MZR LF naturally aspirated (158 hp, 2006-2008; 167 hp, 2009-2015) with 5-speed manual (base), 6-speed manual (GT), or 6-speed automatic. The 2009+ models have forged crankshafts and revised pistons for more power. The NC1 (2006-2008) has a higher-revving engine but slightly less power. The NC2/NC3 (2009-2015) is the improved version with better engine internals.

What to look for: The NC is the most reliable Miata generation. The PRHT (Power Retractable Hard Top) is excellent — check it cycles smoothly. The 6-speed automatic is good but the manual is the enthusiast choice. The 2009+ models have fewer potential issues than the 2006-2008. Rust is rare on NCs. The coolant expansion tank is plastic and can crack — upgrade to aluminum.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the NC Miata the worst generation?

No — it's the most practical, most comfortable, and cheapest Miata. It's heavier than the NA/NB and less precise than the ND, but it's a fantastic daily-driver roadster.

NC vs ND Miata?

The ND is lighter, faster, and more modern. The NC is roomier, cheaper to buy ($7,000-14,000 vs $20,000-30,000), and its PRHT is excellent. Both are brilliant — budget decides.
