992 guide

Porsche 911 (992) Buyer's Guide

The Pinnacle of the 911

The 992 (2020+) is the most powerful, capable, and luxurious 911 ever. It's wider, heavier, and more tech-laden than the 991. The interior is a masterpiece — all digital, beautifully designed, and driver-focused. The 992 pushes the 911 formula to its logical extreme.

Powertrain: The 3.0L twin-turbo flat-six (379 hp, Carrera; 443 hp, Carrera S; 473 hp, GTS) with 8-speed PDK (no manual on base Carrera). The Turbo S (640 hp) and GT3 (502 hp, 4.0L naturally aspirated) continue the tradition. The 2025 hybrid Carrera GTS uses a 3.6L twin-turbo hybrid (532 hp). Manual is available on the GTS and T, with a shorter-throw shifter.

What to look for: Too new for major issues. The 8-speed PDK is excellent. The hybrid system (2025+) is unproven long-term. The 2022+ cars have the updated PCM 6.0 infotainment. The GT3's front suspension is now a double-wishbone design — a first for the 911. The car is costly but holds value exceptionally well.

Generation

About the 992

The 2020-present Porsche 911, known internally as the 992 generation, represents a thorough evolution of the iconic sports car. This generation introduced a wider body across all models, a fully digital dashboard, and a more sophisticated chassis with adaptive dampers becoming more widely available. The 992 is offered as a coupe and Targa body style, with the Cabriolet also part of the lineup. Powertrains center on a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six across most Carrera variants, while the Turbo and Turbo S models use a 3.7-liter unit; a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six powers the GT3 and GT3 RS models. Transmissions include an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic (PDK) and a seven-speed manual on select Carrera and GTS trims. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with Porsche's all-wheel-drive system available on 4 and Targa models.

Compared to the preceding 991 generation, the 992 is larger, more powerful, and more technologically advanced, with sharper styling and a more upscale interior. It retains the rear-engine layout that defines the 911 lineage but adds modern features like a wider track and active aerodynamics. As a used buy, the 992 suits enthusiasts seeking a daily-drivable performance car with strong reliability, strong resale value, and a broad range of capabilities from grand touring to track-focused performance. Its reputation is excellent, with praise for its blend of refinement, speed, and everyday usability, though early examples should be checked for any software-related issues common to new platforms.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the 992 worth the premium over the 991?

The 992 is objectively better — more power, better interior, more advanced tech. But the 991 is $30,000-50,000 less and 90% of the car. For most drivers, the 991 is the better value.

Should I buy the hybrid 992 GTS?

The hybrid GTS (2025+) makes 532 hp and is quicker than the previous Turbo. But it adds weight and complexity. If you want the purest 911 experience, the non-hybrid GTS or GT3 is preferable.
