2021 Tesla Model S

Common problems & what to know before you buy

Before you message the seller, know the documented failure patterns, repair cost exposure, and risk level for the 2021 Tesla Model S.

Common problems

What to watch for on the 2021 Tesla Model S

major

Heat Pump and Octovalve Fault (2021-2022)

Early refresh cars had cold-weather heat pump failures that could leave the cabin without heat and sharply reduce range. Addressed by software and hardware replacement on affected vehicles. Verify the remedy was applied.

Yoke Steering and Stalk Delete (2021-2022)

2021 and 2022 cars use a yoke with no stalks: indicators are wheel buttons and gear selection is on screen. A conventional round wheel became available from 2023. Not a defect, but a major daily-use decision that needs a real test drive.

Market pricing

2021 Tesla Model S price ranges

2021-2022 Long Range$38,000-50,000
2021-2022 Plaid$48,000-62,000
2023-2024 Long Range$48,000-62,000
2023-2024 Plaid$60,000-78,000
2025-2026 Long Range / Plaid$65,000-95,000

2023 and later cars command a premium partly for build quality and partly because the round steering wheel became available, which a large share of buyers specifically want. Plaid carries a substantial premium over Long Range and costs meaningfully more to run, mainly in tires and insurance.

Tesla Model S Palladium (2021+) Buyer's Guide

Plaid, the Yoke, and What Changed

The Palladium refresh landed in mid-2021 and rebuilt the Model S around a new interior, a new rear drive unit layout, and a heat pump. The headline is Plaid: three motors, over a thousand horsepower, and acceleration that remains among the quickest of any production car. The Long Range version is the sensible choice and still very fast.

The controversial part: 2021 and 2022 cars came with a rectangular yoke instead of a steering wheel and deleted the stalks entirely, moving indicators to wheel buttons and gear selection to the touchscreen with an automatic guess based on what is in front of the car. Tesla brought a conventional round wheel back as an option from 2023. This is the single most important thing to test yourself, because opinion on it is genuinely split and a short drive around a car park will not tell you.

What to look for: Early refresh cars from 2021 and 2022 had teething problems, both in assembly and in the heat pump system, and are worth inspecting more carefully than a 2023 or later example. Confirm whether the car has the yoke or the round wheel. Check for open recalls by VIN. Verify which driver assistance package was purchased and whether it transfers.

Ownership reality: Fast, quiet, and long-legged, with running costs dominated by tires and insurance rather than maintenance. Plaid in particular goes through rear tires quickly if driven the way it invites. Body repair remains expensive and slow.

Generation

About the 3rd Gen

The Palladium refresh arrived in mid-2021 and rebuilt the Model S around a new interior, a revised rear drive unit layout, and a heat pump. The headline is Plaid: three motors, over a thousand horsepower, and acceleration that remains among the quickest of any production car, with the Long Range version serving as the sensible and still very fast alternative. Cabin quality, refinement, and cold-weather efficiency all improved significantly over the facelift cars.

The refresh is best known for its controls. 2021 and 2022 cars came with a rectangular yoke in place of a steering wheel and deleted the stalks entirely, moving indicators to wheel buttons and gear selection to the touchscreen. Tesla made a conventional round wheel available again from 2023, and cars fitted with it command a premium because a large share of buyers specifically want one. Early refresh vehicles also carried teething problems, including cold-weather heat pump failures that could leave the cabin without heat and sharply cut range, plus assembly inconsistency and seal issues, so 2021 and 2022 cars deserve closer inspection and keener pricing than a 2023 or later example. Running costs are dominated by tires and insurance rather than maintenance, and Plaid in particular consumes rear tires quickly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yoke or round wheel, and can it be changed?

2021 and 2022 cars came with the yoke; the round wheel became available from 2023. Retrofit kits exist and Tesla has offered a conversion, but it is not trivial or cheap. If you are unsure, buy a car that already has the wheel you want and test drive the yoke properly before dismissing or accepting it.

Is Plaid worth the premium over Long Range?

Only if you actually want the performance. The Long Range is already very quick, has slightly better range, and costs noticeably less to run because it does not devour rear tires. Plaid is a genuine flagship experience, but it is a want rather than a need.

Should I avoid 2021 and 2022 cars?

Not avoid, but inspect harder and price accordingly. They are the first year of a substantial redesign and carry both the heat pump issue and the early build quality problems. Confirm the heat pump remedy was applied and check seals and trim carefully.

How does range hold up in cold weather?

Better than pre-refresh cars thanks to the heat pump, but expect a meaningful reduction in deep cold like any EV. Preconditioning while plugged in recovers much of it. If a 2021 car has an unresolved heat pump fault, cold-weather range and cabin heat will both suffer badly.
