About the 4th Gen

The 2020-present Toyota Highlander is the fourth generation of the three-row crossover and moves to the TNGA-K platform shared with the Camry and RAV4. The 3.5-liter V6 carried over at launch alongside a 2.5-liter Hybrid, and for 2023 a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder replaced the V6 across the range. Transmissions are an eight-speed automatic on gasoline models and an electronically controlled continuously variable unit on the Hybrid, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional.

This generation brought a stiffer, lighter structure, a lower center of gravity, and a more refined ride than its predecessor. Toyota also introduced the longer Grand Highlander alongside it for 2024, aimed at buyers who found the third row tight. Compared with the third generation, the interior technology is considerably more advanced and the Hybrid is far more efficient, though third-row space remains the model's weakest point.

As a used buy, the fourth-generation Highlander is a low-risk choice with most examples still recent enough to carry remaining coverage. The Hybrid is the standout for buyers prioritizing running costs, with real-world economy far ahead of the segment. The main consideration for anyone cross-shopping model years is the 2023 powertrain change, which trades the well-proven V6 for a turbocharged engine with a shorter track record. Third-row and cargo space should be verified in person against a Grand Highlander if passengers are a priority.
