2015 Toyota Tacoma

The 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma is the second generation of the model and marked a significant step up in size, moving the Tacoma from the compact class into the mid-size segment. Powertrains were the 2.7-liter 2TR-FE four-cylinder and the 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6, matched to a five- or six-speed manual or a four- or five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive and part-time four-wheel drive were both offered. Body styles included a Regular Cab through 2006, the extended Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab, with the sport-oriented X-Runner offered on the two-wheel-drive chassis.

This generation introduced a composite bed with integrated tie-down rails, a longer wheelbase, and a considerably more car-like cabin than the first-generation truck. The 1GR-FE V6 in particular delivered a large jump in output over the outgoing 5VZ-FE while retaining Toyota's reputation for longevity. The 2016 third generation kept the same basic footprint but replaced both engines and heavily revised the interior.

As a used buy, the second-generation Tacoma is often considered the sweet spot of the model line, combining modern crash structure and creature comforts with mechanical simplicity. Frame corrosion again affected early years of this generation and was covered by an extended warranty program, making a frame inspection essential on any truck from a road-salt region. Leaf spring sag on the rear axle and lower ball joint wear are the other items worth checking. Both engines are durable when maintained, and manual-transmission four-wheel-drive examples command a clear premium.
