2025 Toyota Tacoma

The 2024-present Toyota Tacoma is the fourth generation of the mid-size pickup and the first to abandon naturally aspirated engines entirely. It rides on the TNGA-F body-on-frame platform shared with the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. Power comes from the 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE four-cylinder, with an i-FORCE MAX hybrid version pairing the same engine with an electric motor for higher output and torque. Transmissions are an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual on selected off-road trims, with rear-wheel drive and part-time four-wheel drive available.

The move to TNGA-F brought a stiffer frame, a wider track, and a redesigned interior that addressed long-standing criticism of the previous generation's seating position. Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims replace the rear leaf springs with a coil-spring multi-link setup, a first for the model. Compared with the third generation, the new truck is more powerful, more refined on road, and considerably more complex mechanically.

As a used buy, the fourth-generation Tacoma is still early in its life, so long-term reliability data is limited and most examples remain under factory warranty. The turbocharged and hybrid powertrains are new to this segment for Toyota, which is worth weighing against the very long track record of the engines they replace. Buyers drawn to this generation are typically after the modern interior, the higher tow ratings, and the coil-sprung off-road trims that were never available before.
