About the GMT800

The 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe is the GMT800 generation of the full-size SUV, built on the same platform as the Silverado pickup of the period. Engines were the 4.8 and 5.3-liter Vortec V8s, with the 6.0-liter available in some configurations, paired with a four-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard with four-wheel drive optional. The body is a four-door wagon with two or three rows of seating, positioned below the longer Suburban.

This generation moved the Tahoe onto a stiffer frame with a much better interior and independent front suspension across the range. Autoride load-leveling suspension was available on higher trims. The GMT900 generation that followed in 2007 brought a more aerodynamic body and cylinder deactivation.

As a used buy, the GMT800 Tahoe shares the durability reputation of the Vortec V8s that powered the Silverado of the same period. Corrosion is the primary concern at this age, particularly rocker panels, rear wheel arches, and brake and fuel lines on vehicles from salted regions. Instrument cluster stepper motor failure is common and inexpensive to fix. Intake manifold gaskets and fuel pumps are routine age-related repairs. The absence of cylinder deactivation on these engines is a genuine advantage over the generation that followed.
