About the GMT900

The 2007-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is the GMT900 generation, a comprehensive redesign with a more aerodynamic body, a stiffer frame, and a substantially improved interior. The 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with Active Fuel Management was the volume engine, paired with a four- and later six-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard with four-wheel drive optional. A two-mode hybrid version was offered, and the body remains a four-door wagon with three rows of seating.

Refinement improved markedly over the GMT800, with better sound insulation and a more modern dashboard. Active Fuel Management was added for fuel economy and, as on the Silverado, became the defining ownership topic for the generation. The K2UC generation that followed in 2015 introduced the EcoTec3 engines and a much better interior still.

For used buyers, this Tahoe is comfortable and capable but carries the same cylinder deactivation concern as its pickup counterpart. Collapsed lifters and elevated oil consumption on Active Fuel Management engines require cylinder head removal to repair properly, which is a substantial expense. Cracked dashboards are essentially universal. Verifying oil consumption over a known interval and listening carefully at cold start are the checks that matter most on this generation.
