About the 1st Gen

The 2009-2017 Chevrolet Traverse is the first generation of Chevrolet's large three-row crossover, built on the Lambda platform shared with the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and the discontinued Saturn Outlook. It is powered by the 3.6-liter V6, the LLT at launch and the revised LFX from 2013, paired with a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional. Seating is for seven or eight across three rows, with cargo space among the largest in the unibody class.

The Traverse was designed to offer the interior volume of a full-size SUV without the fuel consumption or ride penalty of a body-on-frame chassis, and its third row is genuinely adult-sized. A facelift for 2013 revised the front-end styling and interior. The second generation that arrived in 2018 moved to the newer C1XX platform.

As a used buy, this generation delivers exceptional space for the money but has several well-documented mechanical concerns. Timing chain stretch on the early LLT engine is the most significant, producing a rattle at start-up and eventually a check-engine light, and the repair is labor-intensive. The six-speed automatic is associated with wave plate failure that causes a loss of drive. Power steering pump and rack failures are also common. Post-2013 vehicles with the LFX engine avoid the worst of the timing chain issue and are the safer purchase.
