About the 2nd Gen

The 2003-2006 Ford Expedition is the second generation of the full-size SUV and introduced an independent rear suspension, a significant change that allowed a much lower third-row floor and a flat-folding rear seat. Engines were the 4.6-liter and 5.4-liter Triton V8s paired with a four-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive standard and four-wheel drive optional. Three rows of seating for up to nine were available depending on configuration.

The independent rear suspension gave this Expedition a clear packaging advantage over the solid-axle competition of the period and improved ride quality. A power-folding third row was offered on higher trims. The third generation that followed in 2007 grew larger and added an extended-length model to the range.

For used buyers, the flat-folding third row is the practical draw of this generation. The 5.4-liter Triton moved to a three-valve cylinder head for 2004, which introduced a different spark plug problem: the two-piece plugs used in these heads frequently break during removal, making a routine service into a specialized job. Cam phaser noise on cold start is another characteristic of this engine family. Rear air suspension failure and rear differential service are the other common items on higher-mileage vehicles.
