About the 3rd Gen

The 2007-2017 Ford Expedition is the third generation of the full-size SUV and had a very long production run. It launched with the 5.4-liter three-valve Triton V8 and a six-speed automatic, and from 2015 switched to the 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6, a significant change for a vehicle of this size. Rear-wheel drive was standard with four-wheel drive optional. An extended-wheelbase Expedition EL joined the range, offering substantially more cargo space behind the third row.

The move to EcoBoost power in 2015 came with a comprehensive interior update and improved both performance and fuel economy over the outgoing V8. The independent rear suspension carried over, keeping the flat third-row floor. The fourth generation that followed in 2018 moved to an aluminum body.

As a used buy, the split between V8 and EcoBoost model years is the central decision in this generation. The three-valve 5.4-liter carries the well-known broken spark plug and cam phaser issues and is the weaker engine. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost in the later cars is considerably stronger and better regarded, though it introduces turbochargers and a timing chain arrangement that require attention on high-mileage examples. Post-2015 vehicles are worth a clear premium for both the powertrain and the interior.
