About the KM

The 2005-2010 Kia Sportage is the KM generation and moved the model from a small body-on-frame SUV to a unibody crossover sharing its platform with the Hyundai Tucson of the same period. Engines were a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 2.7-liter V6, paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive optional. The body is a five-door wagon with two rows of seating.

The KM competed almost entirely on price and warranty, offering standard safety equipment and space comparable to established rivals for meaningfully less money. Interior materials and refinement were the obvious compromises. The SL generation that followed in 2011 transformed the model's image with a much more striking design.

As a used buy, KM Sportages are inexpensive and mechanically simple. The 2.7-liter V6 uses a timing belt that requires scheduled replacement. Corrosion on the rear subframe and suspension mounting points is the main structural concern on northern vehicles. The four-speed automatic is dated but durable. As with most vehicles in this price bracket, documented maintenance history matters far more than mileage or trim.
