About the SL

The 2011-2016 Kia Sportage is the SL generation and marks the point at which Kia's design overhaul under Peter Schreyer transformed how the brand was perceived. The body is dramatically lower and more sharply drawn than its predecessor. Engines were a 2.4-liter Theta II four-cylinder and a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit in the SX, paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive optional.

The styling change was accompanied by a genuine improvement in interior quality and driving dynamics, and the turbocharged SX gave the model performance well ahead of most compact crossovers of the period. The trade-off was reduced rear headroom and cargo volume relative to boxier rivals. The QL generation that followed in 2017 softened the shape slightly and improved practicality.

For used buyers, the SL Sportage is attractive and inexpensive. The 2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged Theta II engines are part of the family subject to large-scale recalls for connecting rod bearing wear, and verifying recall completion and the knock sensor detection software update is the highest-value check on any of these. Cargo space is modest for the class and should be assessed against actual needs rather than assumed.
