About the 4th Gen
The 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner is the fourth generation of the mid-size SUV, built on a new frame shared in part with the Lexus GX and the FJ Cruiser. Engines were the 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 and, through 2009, the 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8, matched to a four- or five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard, part-time four-wheel drive was offered on V6 models, and V8 models used a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential. A third-row seat became available for the first time.
This generation introduced a significantly stiffer frame, rack-and-pinion steering, and the X-REAS cross-linked damper system on Sport Edition models. Compared to the third generation it is larger, heavier, and much better equipped, while retaining genuine low-range off-road hardware. The fifth generation that arrived in 2010 dropped the V8 and simplified the range around a single V6.
As a used buy, the fourth-generation 4Runner is valued for the combination of V8 availability and real off-road capability in a package that is still manageable in size. Frame corrosion remains the primary structural concern on trucks from salt regions. The X-REAS suspension system is expensive to repair and many owners convert to conventional dampers when it fails. Both engines have strong reliability records, and the V8 with the full-time four-wheel-drive system is the configuration enthusiasts seek out.
