About the 6th Gen
The 2025-present Toyota 4Runner is the sixth generation of the mid-size SUV and moves the model onto the TNGA-F platform shared with the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. The naturally aspirated V6 is replaced by the 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE four-cylinder, with an i-FORCE MAX hybrid version available for higher output and torque. An eight-speed automatic is standard, with rear-wheel drive and part-time or full-time four-wheel drive depending on trim. Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims sit at the top of the off-road range.
Beyond the powertrain, the most consequential changes are the stiffer platform, a completely redesigned interior with modern infotainment, and a broader trim ladder than the previous generation offered. The available third row returns. Compared with the fifth generation, this 4Runner is quicker, more efficient, and far more current inside, while giving up the extremely simple drivetrain that defined its predecessor.
As a used buy, this generation is new enough that virtually all examples remain under factory warranty and long-term durability data does not yet exist. The relevant trade-off for buyers is straightforward: significantly better on-road manners and equipment against a turbocharged powertrain with no track record in this application. Early demand has been concentrated in the Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims, which carry the most distinctive off-road hardware.
