About the 5th Gen

The 2010-2024 Toyota 4Runner is the fifth generation of the model and remained in production essentially unchanged for fifteen model years, one of the longest runs of any vehicle in the modern American market. A single powertrain was offered throughout: the 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 paired with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with part-time four-wheel drive on most trims and a full-time system with a locking center differential on the Limited. A third-row seat remained optional on selected trims.

Trim structure did most of the work of differentiating this generation over time, with the TRD Off-Road adding a locking rear differential and Crawl Control, the TRD Pro adding uprated dampers and a lift, and the Venture and 40th Anniversary editions arriving late in the run. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which disconnects the sway bars for articulation, is a significant option on off-road trims. The sixth generation arriving for 2025 finally replaced the V6 with turbocharged and hybrid four-cylinders.

For used buyers, this generation trades modern efficiency and interior technology for an unusually well-understood mechanical package and resale value that is among the strongest of any SUV. The 1GR-FE and the five-speed automatic have very few systemic faults. Items worth attention are the KDSS actuator and lines on equipped trucks, and rear differential and driveline service on high-mileage four-wheel-drive examples. Because the truck changed so little, model year matters far less than condition and trim.
