Subaru Forester (5th Gen) Buyer's Guide

SUV Practicality and CVT Care

The 5th-gen Forester (2019+) dropped the turbo engine option entirely, focusing on efficiency, safety, and practicality. It's the best-selling Subaru in America thanks to excellent visibility, spacious interior, and standard AWD.

Powertrain: The 2.5L FB25 naturally aspirated (182 hp) is the only engine in most markets. The 2025+ model introduced a 2.5L hybrid. The Lineartronic CVT is the sole transmission. The Wilderness trim (2022+) adds 9.2 inches of ground clearance and a dual-function X-Mode for off-road driving.

What to look for: The 2.5L is underpowered for highway passing — 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. CVT fluid changes are critical. The 2019-2020 model years had more infotainment complaints. The 2022+ models have improved suspension and better noise insulation. The Eyesight system is standard and excellent.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Forester underpowered?

Yes, by segment standards. 0-60 in 8.4 seconds is slow. The payoff is excellent fuel economy (29 MPG combined) and bulletproof reliability. If you need more power, look at the Outback XT or the Mazda CX-5 Turbo.

Forester vs RAV4 vs CR-V?

The Forester wins on visibility, standard AWD, and practicality. The RAV4 offers a hybrid option. The CR-V is more refined. All three are excellent — test drive for cabin noise and seating comfort.

Is the Wilderness worth the MPG trade-off?

You lose about 3 MPG (26 vs 29 combined) for the raised suspension and all-terrain tires. If you actually go off-road, the dual X-Mode is excellent. For pavement-only use, stick with a Sport or Limited.
